Building a High-Performing Remote Team: Lessons from TZG Europe
Building a great team, but doing it across borders and time zones adds in a remote environment brings a whole new set of challenges. We’ve spent years refining our approach to building a High-Performing Remote Team, and wanted to share what we think really drives productivity, engagement, and sustainable results, at least in our experience.
The foundation of a high-performing remote team is more than just technology. The organizational mindset, company culture and a relentless focus on meritocracy must be there. Here are five core lessons that have made the biggest difference for us, along with practical tips for leaders everywhere.
Start with Trust
A successful remote team starts with trust. For us, that means hiring for mindset and potential – not just technical skills or CV highlights. We look for people who are proactive, adaptable, and eager to learn. Setting clear expectations and communicating transparently from day one ensures everyone knows what success looks like. Trust isn’t just given; it’s built through openness, honesty, and consistent follow-through.
Over-Communicate
With teams spread across locations, it’s easy for information to get lost. That’s why we establish regular communication rituals: daily and weekly huddles and closeouts, frequent video calls and shared async tools that keep everyone in sync. We encourage feedback at all levels – up, down, and sideways. An open feedback culture helps us identify challenges early and celebrate wins together.
Empower Autonomy, Celebrate Results
A key part of our meritocratic culture is empowering people to own their work. We focus on outcomes, not hours. Clear goals and trust in each team member’s judgment means less micromanaging and more innovation. We make a point to recognize and celebrate achievements publicly. Every win – big or small – strengthens our team’s sense of ownership and pride.
Invest in Connection
Great remote teams don’t happen by accident; they’re built on genuine relationships. We invest in virtual coffee breaks, team-building sessions, and (when possible) in-person meetups.
Celebrating personal milestones like birthdays or work anniversaries helps everyone feel seen and valued. Even in a remote environment, human connection is what turns colleagues into a real team.
Keep Improving
Continuous learning is at the heart of a high-performing remote team. We regularly gather feedback, try new tools and processes, and invest in upskilling our people. Our standards for selection are high, but it’s paying dividends: our retention rate is excellent, and our teams are motivated to keep raising the bar.
The lesson is that remote work is here to stay. With the right culture and systems in place, any team can thrive wherever they are. But in our understanding, building a high-performing remote team isn’t just about hitting targets; it’s about creating an environment where people grow, contribute, and do their best work every day.
